Chapter Twenty

Kyle

I was so pissed that I felt like I was going to explode. I wanted to kill all of those fuckers for putting their hands on her in the first place. When I’d heard her cry out in pain, I’d been on the balcony and I almost pushed the poor room service attendant to the ground when I walked in the door. I’d watched as they basically dragged Amelia out the door and I couldn’t do anything.

I was so thankful that Sean had given me the number for that lawyer because I had called him immediately. The room service attendant stood there quietly as I spoke on the phone and the second I’d hung up, he asked if I wanted the video he’d taken. I asked him what had possessed him to film the interaction and he had said that he could tell something was off immediately.

I drove us back towards the hotel in silence. Amelia just stared out the window the entire time and I couldn’t think of anything to say to make her feel better. When her phone rang, she looked at the display and answered it with a sigh.

“Hi, Laney… I’m okay, really… Yeah, the funeral is tomorrow and then we’ll come home.”

Listening to her call Sacramento her home made me smile. When we’d been sitting with Kirby yesterday, I’d started to feel out of place. I’d never felt insecure about the money I made until that moment. Shane had built quite the empire and Amelia was used to living extravagantly. She’d confessed to Kirby that it was too much, though, and they’d arranged to put most of it in several interest earning accounts that she couldn’t touch for a few years.

“I will. Thanks, darlin’. See you tomorrow.” Amelia put the phone in her lap and let out a long sigh. “I’m hungry.”

I chuckled and nodded my head. “So am I. Want to eat in the room or go somewhere?”

“Do you want to try that rooftop restaurant of the hotel?” I could see her look at me out of the corner of my eye. “If we go back to the room to eat, I won’t want to leave for the rest of the day.”

I didn’t see a problem with that but I didn’t say anything. I pulled us into the valet area and made it around the car as she was climbing out. I didn’t let go of her hand again until we got back to the room and even then I was reluctant.

I watched from the bathroom door as she ran a brush through her long, blonde hair. It’d dried in long, perfect waves that seemed to frustrate her. I heard her mumble something about wanting straight hair and I just shook my head.

“And Delaney says she wants your hair. You girls are weird.”

Amelia walked over and reached her hand up to sweep it through my messy hair. “Not all of us can pull off the mussed look like you can, Kyle.”

“You could pull off any look, Amelia.
